All of these reflections should be in one document.  You will submit it at the end of term

 

Each time we watch a movie or have a guest speaker come to our class you will be required to write a short reflection to summarize your thoughts.  Mr. McKean will often provide prompts to use that will guide you through the reflection.

 

TERM 2

 

14.  Grief with Shauna.

 

1.  Rate the presentation out of 10

2.  She shared a story of a student that lost his Grandma and Grandpa.  He felt guilty because he was sad about losing his Grandpa but not nearly that sad about losing his Grandma.  What was her explanation for this?

3.  Briefly summarize the figure 8 of grief that she showed the class.

 

13.  Bipolar Disorder with Natasha 

 

1.  Rate this presentation out of 10.

2.  Have your thoughts on mental health changed at all after the presentation?

3.  Do you think that this is a good presentation for high school students?

4.  What do you think was the main message she was trying to delivery to our class?

 

12.  Matchstick Men:  Movie with Nicholas Cage

 

1. Rate the movie out of 10.

 

2  In the movie Nicholas Cage has a number of mental health ailments that he battles.  At one point his medication falls down the sink garberator and he falls into a downword spiral.  (This was when he starts cleaning his house.)  He then sees a new Psychiatrist who gives him a new medication to try.  The medication works very well and Nicholas Cage is able to control his behaviours.  In the end we discover the medication was a menopause medicine (something for middle aged woman)
 

          Question: Why do you think that he responded so well to the placebo medicine?
          Question:  Do you think that prescribing a person a fake medicine could actually help them, or is this just a way to add to the plot of this Hollywood movie?  

 

11.  Kathy and Oliver: Insurance

 

1.  Rate the presentation out of 10.

2.  Why might a person get tennants or renters insurance?  Why might a person not get tennants or renters insurance?  What would you do when you move out?  (It costs $43/month for their coverage up to $40,000)

3.  Why is it imporant for an individual to get their drivers licence right away even if they don't plan on driving for 10 years?

4.  What was the most interesting thing you learned?

5.  Should I get them to return for my planning classes next year?

 

10.  Jas with Economics for Success

 

This was Jas's second time ever talking with high school studetns.  I think he learned more from the experience than some of you.

iii)  He talked about how many jobs are no longer available in North America, many entry level jobs are outsourced to countries where the labour is cheaper.  At the same time, high end jobs can be done from people who live in different regions also, meaning you could live in Victoria and manage a company in a foreign country.  Question:  How do you feel about that?  Do you think it will make it harder for you to get a job in the future?

 

iv)We did the budgeting task on the computer.  Did anything surprise you?  If so what?  If no they why not?

 

v) If you could give Jas some advice before he goes into another high school, what advice would you give him?

 

vi) Jas showed us how some university programs such as engineering enroll a very large number of people where as nursing is much more limited in space.  Has this changed your thoughts at all about what university program you consider? 

 

 

9.  Adam Hall and Gambling

 

Adam arrived the day our computers in the lab were malfunctioning.  He just "Winged It" as he could not use his powerpoint.  As a result his presentation was not as good as it normally is. You can keep this response short.

iii)  Overall thoughts and opinions.

 

8.  Erica from UVic.  Conflict in Relationships.

 

Erica spoke about a number of things that are harmful to do when in a conflict and somethings are helpful.

 

Example of harmful things:

Stone walling

Contempt

Criticism: "You Never...!" or "You Always...!" 

 

Example of helpful:

If you need to take a pause during an argument and one person leaves, make sure to schedule a time to start the conversation again.  "I need to cool off, lets talk in 5 minutes.

 

Other things were non-verbal communication, your body language.

 


Write a paragraph sharing about something you learned, found useful, something you realized you do...etc.
Also include if you found the presentation useful.

7.  Social Capital Lesson (April 14th)

 

You should be able to answer all these questions from the lesson.  You do not need to provide any fancy definitions from the internet.  Simply paraphrase what we discussed in class.

What is social capital? Is it important? Tell me your thoughts? How does this relate to knowing a person’s name and using a person’s name? Answer these questions into your reflections document. For full marks you must thoroughly answer the question and provide examples from everyday life. (5 marks)

6.  The Pursuit of Happyness with Will Smith. (Monday March 31-Tuesday April 1)

 

Answer the following question in a full paragraph response.  This reflection will be worth more marks than the other submissions and requires a thoughtful response.

 

First rate the movie out of 10.

 

Question to answer:  The movie is a success story of the life of Chris Gardner.  What where the toughest challenges that Chris faced and what qualities did he possess that enabled him to overcome the challenges.  Make specific references to the movie.

4.  Joan from UVic: Fitness, Fatness, Finance, and Friends (Tuesday, March 25th)

-  She said that the health of a person and how long they live is dependent on the 4 F's, fitness, fatness, finance and friends.  Which of the 4 F's did you find most surprising?
